The Mumbai customs department has arrested a 40-year-old woman from the United Kingdom (UK) for allegedly smuggling 3.4 kilograms of gold worth Rs 1.63 crore from Kenya to India by concealing it in her undergarments, sources said.

According to customs officials, UK national Sahra Mohammed Omar arrived at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International airport in Mumbai via Kenya Airlways flight KQ 202 on September 30.

When she was examined, 22 karat 17 melted gold bars were found in her bra and 21 karat gold assorted jewellery was found in her possession.

During interrogation, she admitted to having smuggled the gold, customs sources said. She was placed under arrest under relevant sections of the Customs Act and was produced before a holiday court on Sunday.

Advocate Prabhakar Tripathi, who appeared for the woman, said, “The accused person is a UK national and was not aware of the customs laws of India.” The court remanded her in judicial custody.
