Karnataka is planning to establish a dedicated drone flight testing facility in Chikkaballapur near Bengaluru airport, marking a significant step towards strengthening the state’s rapidly growing drone ecosystem.
The proposed facility, expected to spread across 10 acres, was discussed during a high-level drone industry consultation chaired by Priyank Kharge on May 15 in Bengaluru.
The consultation was organised by the Karnataka Department of Electronics, IT and Biotechnology in collaboration with the Drone Federation of India. Industry leaders, startups, policymakers, and drone technology experts participated in the meeting to discuss the future of drone innovation and infrastructure in the state.
The proposed testing facility is expected to provide companies and startups with a dedicated and regulated space to test drone technologies safely. The move comes as Karnataka continues positioning itself as a leading hub for aerospace, defence technology, artificial intelligence, and emerging tech innovation.
Officials believe the facility will support research, pilot training, product validation, and commercial drone operations, while also attracting investments and encouraging local manufacturing.
The state government is also looking at policies that can help startups scale operations in the drone sector. Industry stakeholders reportedly discussed easing regulatory hurdles, improving infrastructure, and creating stronger collaboration between government bodies and private firms.
