A direct flight between Pune and Bagdogra started on Thursday, improving travel between Western India and the Northeast.
The service is run by Air India Express and will operate five days a week, except Tuesday and Saturday.
Officials said the new route will make travel easier for students, professionals, and tourists, and will also help boost tourism and trade.
Pune, often referred to as an education and innovation hub, will now have direct access to Bagdogra which is known for its proximity to popular destinations in the Northeast.
This step is part of efforts by the Airports Authority of India to improve regional connectivity and better connect less-served areas.
Murlidhar Mohol said the new route will bring the Northeast closer to Western India and help increase business, travel, and cultural exchange.
