After Cabinet's Nod, This Maharashtra Airport Is Poised To Become Central India’s Key Aviation Hub

Nagpur’s Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport is set for a major transformation after the Union Cabinet approved a key proposal that clears the way for the development of a world-class aviation hub in Central India.

The Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday approved the extension of the lease period of Airports Authority of India (AAI) land leased to MIHAN India Limited (MIL) beyond August 6, 2039. The move enables MIL to hand over the airport to GMR Nagpur International Airport Limited (GNIAL) under a 30-year concession agreement from the Commercial Operation Date (COD).

The decision marks a major milestone for the Multi-modal International Cargo Hub and Airport at Nagpur (MIHAN) project, which aims to transform Nagpur into a major passenger and cargo aviation centre.

With the lease extension now aligned with GNIAL’s 30-year concession period, authorities said the project can move ahead without legal or operational hurdles. Officials expect the development to bring large-scale investment, modern infrastructure, and improved passenger and cargo handling facilities to the airport.
