11 kg Hydroponic Weed Worth ₹11 Crore Seized at Chennai Airport, NCB Launches Probe

Customs officials at Chennai International Airport have seized 11 kg of hydroponic cannabis, valued at around ₹11 crore in the illicit market, from two passengers who had arrived from Thailand. The contraband was detected during separate checks after officers found suspicious packets concealed in the travellers' baggage. According to customs officials, the passengers, both from Kerala, were intercepted based on intelligence inputs and subsequently arrested under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

The Times of India reported that the seizure involved hydroponic weed, a high-potency form of cannabis cultivated using controlled growing techniques. Following the bust, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) was brought in to investigate the wider trafficking network and identify possible receivers and distributors in India. Customs officials said the case points to an emerging trend of drug smuggling through passengers arriving from Southeast Asian countries.

Quoting officials, The New Indian Express reported that the seized narcotics carried an estimated street value of about ₹11 crore. Investigators are now examining the travel history, financial transactions and contacts of the accused to determine whether they were acting as couriers or part of an organized international syndicate. Authorities said further arrests are possible as the probe expands into the supply chain and local distribution network linked to the seizure.
