Air New Zealand Evaluates Direct Flights to India Amid Growing Bilateral Ties

Air New Zealand is assessing the feasibility of launching non-stop flights to India as the carrier looks to capitalize on growing economic, trade and tourism links between the two countries. The airline's Chief Executive Officer, Nikhil Ravishankar, said the recent India–New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA) has created fresh opportunities for stronger people-to-people and business connectivity, prompting the airline to study the viability of direct services to Indian cities.

Speaking on the sidelines of the IATA Annual General Meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Ravishankar said Air New Zealand was "assessing the viability of direct flights to Indian cities" and noted that the trade pact "provides increased opportunities" for travel and commerce between the two nations. While no timeline or destination has been announced, the airline is evaluating market demand and operational requirements before making a decision.

The move builds on Air New Zealand's existing partnership with Air India. In March 2025, the two carriers signed a memorandum of understanding that established a codeshare agreement across 16 routes linking India, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand, while also committing to explore the possibility of direct India–New Zealand flights by 2028. The recently signed FTA is expected to further boost trade, tourism and investment flows, strengthening the business case for a future non-stop air link between the two countries.
