Brazilian aerospace manufacturer Embraer has stepped up its campaign for the Indian Air Force's Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) programme by offering to establish a full-scale assembly line for its C-390 Millennium military transport aircraft in India. The proposal would position India as a production and export hub for the aircraft if the C-390 is selected to replace the IAF's ageing medium-lift transport fleet, according to reports.
According to FlightGlobal, Embraer is marketing the C-390 as a versatile multi-role transport aircraft capable of carrying up to 26 tonnes of payload while operating from short and semi-prepared runways. The company has said that local production would allow Indian firms to become part of its global aerospace supply chain, creating opportunities in manufacturing, maintenance, repair and overhaul, and exports.
Embraer has partnered with the Mahindra Group to strengthen its bid and has proposed extensive technology transfer and industrial cooperation in India. The company expects progress on the MTA procurement programme in the coming months, with the Indian Air Force projected to acquire around 80 aircraft under the initiative to modernise its transport fleet.
