New Delhi: India's civil aviation sector is undergoing a period of unprecedented growth, driven by rising passenger demand, massive investments in airport infrastructure, and government initiatives aimed at improving regional connectivity.
The country's emergence as the world's third-largest domestic aviation market reflects a broader transformation in the way Indians travel. Speaking at an aviation event in New Delhi, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said that India's aviation story had become a symbol of the country's economic progress and aspirations.
"India has emerged as the world's third-largest domestic aviation market," The Hindu BusinessLine quoted her as saying, adding that the achievement underscored the rapid expansion of air connectivity and the increasing accessibility of air travel to millions of Indians. She noted that the growth had been supported by technological advancements and sustained policy support.
According to industry estimates, domestic air passenger traffic has more than doubled over the past decade, aided by rising incomes, a growing middle class and the success of regional connectivity initiatives such as the UDAN scheme. The country's expanding aviation footprint is also evident in the increasing number of operational airports and large aircraft orders placed by Indian carriers. Airbus has projected that Indian airlines could triple their fleet size to around 2,250 aircraft over the next decade, highlighting the sector's long-term growth potential.
The infrastructure push is perhaps most visible in Uttar Pradesh, where the state government is aggressively expanding its aviation network to connect smaller cities with the rest of the country. News18 reported that airport development and terminal expansion projects are under way in cities including Gorakhpur, Agra, Kanpur, Aligarh, Moradabad and Shravasti.
"Uttar Pradesh is continuously strengthening its civil aviation infrastructure to improve air connectivity and accelerate economic development," News18 quoted officials in the state's Civil Aviation Department as saying. The report added that new terminals, land acquisitions and airport upgrades are being fast-tracked to meet rising passenger demand.
Among the major projects is the development of the Noida International Airport at Jewar, which is expected to emerge as a major aviation hub in northern India. At the same time, expansion plans at existing airports are aimed at reducing congestion and extending the benefits of air travel beyond metropolitan centres.
The twin trends of rising demand and infrastructure expansion are reshaping India's aviation landscape. What was once considered a mode of transport primarily for urban elites is increasingly becoming an essential part of the country's mobility network.
With policymakers targeting hundreds of operational airports in the coming decades and airlines preparing for significant fleet expansion, India's aviation sector appears poised for sustained growth. The challenge ahead will be ensuring that this expansion is matched by investments in safety oversight, manpower development and sustainable aviation practices.
As India continues its ascent in global aviation rankings, the sector is likely to play an increasingly important role in driving trade, tourism and regional development, connecting not only major cities but also previously underserved communities across the country.
