IndiGo flights to take off from Kurnool on March 28

Kurnool: IndiGo will begin its operations to three southern cities from the Kurnool Airport under the ‘Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik’ (UDAN) scheme from March 28.

The airport, developed by the Andhra Pradesh Airports Development Corporation Limited, formerly known as Bhogapuram International Airport Company, had received the DGCA approval on January 15.

TruJet is another operator that has been permitted to operate its flights from the airport. IndiGo, in a release from New Delhi, said it would operate flights between Kurnool and Bengaluru, Visakhapatnam and Chennai under the regional connectivity scheme.

The airline plans to operate flights connecting Leh and Darbhanga in February. It also plans to kick-start operations from Agra in March, Bareilly and Durgapur in April, and Rajkot in May.

“It will strategically enhance regional connectivity in southern India as Kurnool will be one of the three capitals in Andhra Pradesh and the node for the Hyderabad-Bengaluru Industrial Corridor,” said Sanjay Kumar, IndiGo’s Chief Strategy and Revenue Officer.

Silver lining in IndiGo earnings: Airline now seventh biggest worldwide by capacity

IndiGo, India’s largest carrier by fleet and domestic market share, has been propelled to the seventh spot worldwide by capacity according to the latest rankings from OAG. The airline wouldn’t have expected to be as big just yet, had it not been for COVID-19. The last year or two has seen IndiGo expand on international routes in a manner that no other airline from India has before.

As the airline declared a loss last week, the CEO was as candid as ever to explain that profitability would return when the airline scaled up to 100 percent of its capacity on the domestic front and was able to start international services.

IndiGo has 332 A320neo on order while the order for A321neo stands at 398 aircraft. Only 30 of the A321neos have been delivered. With capacity restrictions in place in terms of departures, the airline has been extensively deploying its A321neos and opting to bench the A320neo. Not only do they provide capacity, they also provide the long legs to offer charter flights to places — where the airline has not flown in the past — either as scheduled or as charter.

While the airline is in focus globally to have climbed the ranks in top airlines by capacity and for having accepted deliveries of the maximum number of A320 family aircraft in 2020, the next frontier is international. IndiGo has held slots at London Heathrow — the most coveted airport to operate in the world due to its slot restrictions — but has shied away from flying there due to prohibitive costs to induct a widebody and question marks over sustainability of widebody operations.

IndiGo to start flights between Kurnool and three cities from March 28

New Delhi: IndiGo on Friday said it will start direct flights between Kurnool and Bengaluru, Visakhapatnam, and Chennai from March 28 onward under regional connectivity scheme Udan.

As per the airline's press release, Sanjay Kumar, Chief Strategy and Revenue Officer, IndiGo said, "It will strategically enhance regional connectivity in southern India, as Kurnool will be one of three capitals in the state of Andhra Pradesh, as well as the node for the upcoming Hyderabad-Bengaluru Industrial Corridor."

Flights on all three routes -- Bengaluru-Kurnool, Visakhapatnam-Kurnool and Chennai-Kurnool -- will operate four times per week under the regional connectivity scheme, the release noted.

Under the Udan scheme, financial incentives from the Centre, state governments and airport operators are extended to selected airlines to encourage operations from Unserved and underserved airports, and keep airfares affordable.

The release said Kurnool will be the judicial capital of Andhra Pradesh and its increased accessibility will not only help tourists but also government officials travelling to and from the city.

IndiGo Reports Net Loss Of ₹ 620.1 Crore In December Quarter

Interglobe Aviation Limited, which operates the country's biggest airline IndiGo, reported its fourth consecutive quarterly loss on Thursday, January 28, as the COVID-19 pandemic kept air travel well below normal levels. The company reported a net loss of ₹ 620.1 crore in the October-December quarter, as compared to a profit of ₹ 490 crore registered in the year-ago period. The revenue from operations declined 50.6 per cent to ₹ 4,910 crore, according to the company's regulatory filing on the BSE. (Also Read: IndiGo Posts Record Quarterly Loss Of ₹ 1,195 Crore On Pandemic Hit )

The quarterly result was an improvement from the previous two quarters when IndiGo had reported much bigger losses as the pandemic brought a halt to global travel. The country saw stronger levels of domestic travel during the festive season in October and November, according to analysts quoted in a Reuters report. IndiGo also benefited from lower fuel costs. The airline's fuel expenses plunged nearly 66 per cent year-over-year in the quarter.

IndiGo said that the capacity for the quarter went down by 40.8 per cent as compared to the year-ago period. The EBITDAR (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, amortisation, and rent costs) loss stood at ₹ 987.1 crore as against ₹ 1,960.7 crore in the third quarter of the current financial year, registering a year-on-year decline of 49.7 per cent. The EBITDAR margin was at 20.1 per cent for the quarter, compared to 19.7 per cent for the same period last year.

IndiGo Q3 preview: Server hack, fleet expansion among key monitorables

New Delhi: IndiGo, India’s biggest aviation firm by market share, is set to report its December quarter (Q3FY21) results on Thursday, January 28. Amid improved traffic and cost saving measures, analysts are baking in a strong sequential growth in the airline’s earnings even as the figures may be half of the previous year.

In the December quarter of FY20, IndiGo had reported a profit of Rs 490.5 crore, on the back of Rs 9,931.7 crore-revenue, and Rs 1,669.9 crore-EBITDA. However, the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic eroded the airline’s earnings, and its revenue stood at Rs 2,741 crore in Q2FY21. It incurred loss of Rs 1,194.8 crore in the September quarter, and EBITDA of Rs 206 crore.

Investors expect the low cost airline to be a key beneficiary of revival in domestic travel amid the roll out of the coronavirus vaccine. The sentiment resonates in the stock price that has zoomed 38 per cent on the BSE as against a 25.4 per cent rise in the S&P BSE Sensex during the December quarter.

Here’s what brokerages expect from the airline’s Q3 numbers:

IndiGo 8th biggest airline in terms of flights this month; UAE-India second busiest route

New Delhi: The UAE-India corridor has emerged as the second busiest country pair this month, with Mexico-US the biggest in terms of seats deployed by airlines flying between two countries, according to UK-based air consultancy firm OAG.

IndiGo is currently the world’s eight biggest airline globally and Delhi Airport the 12th biggest, in terms of capacity deployment by airlines.

OAG data airlines flying between Mexico and US have deployed 33 lakh seats this month. India-UAE is at second spot with almost 10 lakh seats. Mexico-US seat deployment this January by airlines has returned to almost the same level of same month last year month with marginally 1% lower.

However, India-UAE seats deployment is 48% lower than January 2020.

Almost all big Indian carriers like IndiGo, Air India, SpiceJet, Vistara and GoAir and UAE ones like Emirates, Etihad and flydubai currently flights operate between the countries under an air bubble arrangement.

In terms of number of flights scheduled to be operated this January, American Airlines is at number one with 1.1 lakh flights (43% less than January 2020) followed by Delta, United and Southwest at a lakh, 77,000 and 62,500, respectively.

The big four US carriers are operating the maximum number of flights this month. They are followed by the three Chinese carriers — China Eastern, China Southern and Air China.

IndiGo tightens grip in India and targets growth abroad

New Delhi/Sydney: India’s IndiGo has emerged as one of the world’s biggest airlines by capacity, aided by a swift recovery in the domestic aviation market to nearly 80% of pre-pandemic levels and the financial strength to boost market share as rivals struggle.

The airline is now the world’s seventh biggest by capacity and the largest outside the United States and China, according to data firm OAG. It is a rare bright spot in a battered global aviation industry, providing a lifeline to squeezed lessors and aircraft manufacturers by paying bills on time and in full.

IndiGo took 44 planes from Airbus SE last year - the most of any customer and topping Delta Air Lines Inc and China Southern Airlines Co Ltd - as it replaced older planes with more fuel-efficient newer models. It is also gearing up to expand its fleet further from 2023.

With a 52% domestic market share in 2020 versus 47% in 2019, and profitability in sight after a loss last fiscal year, IndiGo is expanding its reach to smaller Indian cities such as Ranchi, Patna and Gorakhpur to replace a fall in business travel on larger routes like New Delhi-Mumbai, CEO Ronojoy Dutta told Reuters.

It is also betting that faster growth and higher margins will come from non-stop flights to international destinations like Moscow, Cairo and Manila which it can reach with its narrowbody planes, eliminating the need to complicate its fleet with widebody aircraft.

“As things stabilise, I’m very optimistic that by the end of 2021, I think we’ll be totally back to normal,” Dutta said, referring to the calendar year rather than the financial year ending March 31.

“And I think 2022 will be a great year for us in terms of growth and profitability,” he added.

The COVID-19 pandemic brought global air travel to a halt, plunging airlines into the red. India imposed one of the toughest lockdowns and even now airlines can only fly 80% of their total capacity on domestic routes.

IndiGo already had free cash of 89.3 billion rupees ($1.22 billion) as of March 31, 2020, a week after India went into lockdown, which it bolstered by raising more than 30 billion rupees over the next six months through the sale and leaseback of some assets and other cost-cutting measures.

Once IndiGo can operate at full capacity, it wants to ramp up its utilisation rate to a breakeven level of around 12 hours per day, compared with 10 hours currently, said Dutta, adding it would also be able to fill more seats and reduce unit costs.

Parent Interglobe Aviation Ltd’s shares have doubled from pandemic lows in March 2020 to trade within 10% of their October 2019 record high.

Before the pandemic, IndiGo deployed around 25% of its capacity on international routes, where flights are now often restricted to certain countries or charters. This means it is currently operating only about 20% of international flights.

The international business typically offer margins around 10% higher than the price-sensitive domestic market, Dutta said, adding that for now IndiGo would expand using its narrowbody fleet, meaning places like London, where it has slots, are out.

IndiGo’s strong financial position relative to domestic and regional rivals like SpiceJet Ltd, Malaysia’s AirAsia Group Bhd and Indonesia’s Lion Air should help it dominate flights within a seven-hour radius, some analysts say.

Low fare carriers extend special fares to bolster demand

Low fare carriers IndiGo, SpiceJet and AirAsia India have extended the date of special sales, as they try to bolster demand in the upcoming lean travel season.

Bookings for the sale are open between Jan 13 to 24 (extended from the earlier last date of Jan 17) for travel between April 1 to September 30, 2021. IndiGo also offered a fee as low as Rs 500 on the first change for travel during the travel period.

AirAsia India and SpiceJet’s website showed all inclusive fares of Rs 899 for a similar booking (Jan 22) and travel period. SpiceJet also offered vouchers equivalent to the base fare amount or up to a maximum of Rs 1,000 per customer, per flight. AirAsia India is also selling other routes such as Kochi to Bangalore at ₹1,281, Mumbai to Goa at ₹1,875, Delhi to Kolkata at ₹2,501 and Delhi to Mumbai at ₹2,576.

How wrong side driving is causing road accidents after private airline pilot's death on Dwarka Expressway

New Delhi: In a tragic incident, a private airline pilot died after being hit by a truck coming from the wrong side on the Dwarka Expressway near Chintals Corporate Park. The tragic incident occurred on Sunday night.  According to police, the incident took place around 12.20 am when 38-year-old pilot Anmol Verma was returning from the airport to his residence in Sector 109.

The pilot had reached the Dwarka Expressway near Sector-114 when a trailer coming from the wrong direction hit his car from the front. The pilot, who was seriously injured, was rushed to a private hospital by some passersby. The pilot’s Honda accord car was completely damaged due to the impact of the collision.

Police said that the accident was so terrible that although the airbags of the car worked perfectly, the pilot was injured critically and later died in hospital during treatment. The trailer truck driver abandoned his vehicle and is still on the run. However, the police have impounded the truck carrying Haryana registration plate. A case of rash driving under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered at Bajghera police station against the absconding driver, the police said.

Zee News editor-in-chief Sudhir Chaudhary, in his highly popular prime time show DNA, raised the issue of deaths due to wrong side driving and rampant violation of traffic rules by people in India.

The victim was originally from Ambala. The pilot was living in Gurugram along with his mother, wife and two months old son for the last few months.  Anmol had joined the Merchant Navy as an engineer and later became a pilot.

The show highlighted how an innocent family will have to bear the loss of Anmol throughout their life due to careless driving by the accused truck driver. “One truck ignored traffic rules ... and as a result, a family will now suffer,’’ the Zee News Editor said.

Tejashwi Yadav meets kin of slain Indigo manager in Chhapra; urges ‘weak CM’ to control crime

Patna: Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav on Sunday met with the family members of IndiGo airlines manager Rupesh Kumar Singh who was shot dead by unidentified bike-borne men in the Punaichak area of Patna on January 12.

Tejashwi, who is also the Leader of Opposition in Bihar Assembly, launched a scathing attack on Nitish Kumar calling him a weak Chief Minister. He requested the Bihar Chief Minister to look into the law and order situation in the state.

"Going to meet the family of Rupesh Singh (IndiGo manager murdered in Patna). No arrests made yet. DGP says crime rate was higher in 2019, has come down now but for 16 years, Nitish Kumar has been CM. If police behave like this, one can understand ground reality," the RJD leader said before leaving for Chhapra today.

"Requesting Nitish Kumar with folded hands...We know that you're weak CM but for the sake of your position, please don't let human lives be sacrificed. It is your (Bihar CM) responsibility to control crime in the state," he added.

On Saturday, Tejashwi Yadav had charged that the ruling BJP-JD(U) alliance in Bihar has become a "trouble engine" instead of the "double engine" that had promised to propel the state towards progress. He had said that Bihar is becoming the crime capital of the country and those sitting in power in the State are protecting the criminals.
