IndiGo suffered twice as many snags in 2017 but Jet fared worse: Here's how

New Delhi: India's biggest low-cost carrier, IndiGo, which had earlier reported only 340 technical snags to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in 2017, recently revised the data to report 14,628 snags in its fleet during the year – an increase of over 4,200 per cent. While the number now reported by IndiGo is clearly the highest among Indian carriers, the airline might still not be the worst performer on this count
During 2017, IndiGo undertook 311,809 domestic flights and reported 14,628 snags. That translates into a rate of 4.69 per cent of flights developing snags.
By comparison, Air India undertook 113,263 flights (both domestic and international) and reported 4,563 snags – only a little better than IndiGo with a rate of 4.03 per cent.

Jet Airways, on the other hand, reported 9,689 glitches in the 156,700 flights that it operated (domestic and international) during 2017. It implies 6.18 per cent of the flights that the airline operated experienced snags. In other words, Jet Airways’ rate of snags in overall flights undertaken is 1.5 percentage points higher than IndiGo’s, even as the former flew only half as many flights as the latter during the year.

Passenger files complaint against Jet Airways for rescheduling flight

A Delhi resident has filed a complaint with the consumer court against Jet Airways over the alleged rescheduling of his flight from Lucknow to Delhi on July 27. Vipul Singh, a professional from Delhi had booked two tickets for travelling from Lucknow to Delhi on Friday's 7.05 pm flight in April 2018, however, Jet Airways allegedly put Singh on the 3.40 pm flight citing cancellation of the former.

Singh said, "I had booked two tickets from Lucknow to Delhi in April 2018 in an evening flight considering I am travelling there for a medical purpose, however, Jet Airways put me on an afternoon flight, which I cannot take considering I have a doctor's appointment. This is mental agony and they should compensate me."

Singh added, "I had requested Jet Airways to book me on any flight after 5 pm but they said there was no availability of any such flight. However, later I found a 6 pm flight on my route, and I requested Jet Airways to put me on that flight but they did not, citing that it was booked. Now if I book any flight a day prior, I will have to spend more."

ATF may come under 18% GST bracket, but Jet Airways, SpiceJet, IndiGo in tailspin

Government is looking at bringing Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) under the purview of Goods and Services Tax (GST) even as petrol and diesel prices are still out of the GST. The Finance Ministry is planning to include ATF under 18 per cent tax bracket of GST, a source told Zee Business TV.  However, it is unclear exactly how such a move can impact airfares. Expectations are that the benefits would be passed on to flyers.

However, just yesterday Jayant Sinha, Minister of State for Civil Aviation said in the Rajya Sabha that there is no such proposal to bring ATF under GST.

"At present, there is no proposal to include ATF under GST," said Sinha in the Rajya Sabha.

Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu had earlier said that the move will help cut costs as airlines would get input tax credit.

India emerges as a key player at Farnborough airshow

The rising potential of opportunities in the Indian skies has been clearly evident at the Farnborough International Airshow which saw $46.4 billion in deals announced on the first day and the $95.9 billion mark breached on the second day. Naresh Goyal-promoted Jet Airways on Tuesday signed a formal agreement with Boeing to acquire an additional 75 latest single-aisle 737 Max aircraft valued at $8.8 billion.

Speaking exclusively to The Sunday Guardian, Dinesh Keskar, Senior Vice President, Asia Pacific and India Sales, for Boeing Commercial Airplanes, said, “The fact that Jet Airways has ordered 75 additional 737 Max 8 at the 2018 Farnborough International Airshow confirms that Indian skies will continue to reflect double digit growth like in the past 4-5 years. This clearly reflects the fact that the Indian aviation sector will absorb a lot of single aisle and wide-bodied aircraft.” Apart from the deal with Jet Airways, Boeing seemed excited about making inroads into full service airline Vistara. “Coming from the Singapore Airlines stable, Vistara flies a lot of Airbus A-320 and Neos. That they have opted for Boeing 787 is good news for us,” Keskar added.

Jet Airways chairman Naresh Goyal said after the signing ceremony on the first day of the Farnborough show: “The order emphasises Jet Airways’ commitment to the growth and potential of the Indian aviation market.”

Bengaluru airport's most punctual domestic airlines in June: Vistara, Jet fly high; GoAir flops

Bengaluru: Vistara and Jet Airways and are the two airlines that have maintained a record of being the most punctual in June among all scheduled domestic airlines while operating from Bengaluru airport, the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has revealed. GoAir, however, had the worst record among the six airlines on the punctuality factor from the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA).

These aspects were highlighted in DGCA’s June 2018 report on ‘Performance of Domestic Airlines’ made public recently. Air India, Jet Airways (and Jetlite) Vistara, GoAir, SpiceJet and IndiGo were compared for their ‘on-time performance’ in the airports of New Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Bengaluru.

The main reason for the delays (64%) are ‘reactionary’, the report states. Reactionary or ‘knock-on’ delays refer to previous late arrivals or departures, it is learnt.
