IndiGo, SpiceJet may clock combined Q4 loss of Rs 3,350 cr

New Delhi: As most aircraft stand parked amid the outbreak of coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, March quarter of financial year 2019-20 (Q4FY20) could be first among the many loss-making quarters for the aviation sector, fear analysts.

Almost all airlines, including IndiGo and SpiceJet, had drastically cut operations by mid-March, and had begun grounding fleet as net bookings fell into negative — meaning there are more cancellations than fresh bookings on domestic routes. It all came to a complete halt when the government on March 25 imposed a ban on domestic air travel to stem the spread of the virus. This was on top of a ban on international flights which had been in place since March 22.

According to Gagan Dixit, research analyst at Elara Capital, IndiGo and SpiceJet could report a cumulative net loss of Rs 3,350 crore in Q4FY20, as against a profit of Rs 570 crore in Q3FY20 and Rs 650 crore in Q4FY19.

“We expect a YoY yield decrease of IndiGo by 8 per cent and SpiceJet by 10 per cent on lower airfare amid fear of Covid-19 keeping airfares in check, nil fleet addition by SpiceJet and subdued 1 per cent QoQ fleet addition by IndiGo,” he wrote in a sector preview note.

The benefit of crash in crude oil prices in March in likely to be off-set by the depreciation of rupee and slim air traffic movement in the recently concluded quarter.

“While crude prices have slumped 50 per cent in March, the impact of the same would be realised only once operations resume. The interim cut of 11-12 per cent in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices effective March 23 will have little impact as operations got suspended from March 25. Further, the rupee has depreciated by 5.8 per cent in Q4FY20E which will increase outgo for US dollar-based costs and also result in steep fx mark-to-market (MTM) losses on operating lease liabilities,” wrote analysts at Centrum Broking in a results preview note.

According to the brokerage, Interglobe Aviation-run IndiGo could report a net loss of Rs 1,750 crore in the quarter under review primarily due to MTM losses worth Rs 1,010 crore. It had reported a net profit of Rs 496 crore in the December quarter of FY20 and Rs 589 crore in Q4FY19.

“We expect IndiGo’s passenger traffic to grow 0.6 per cent YoY to 17.6 million in Q4FY20 due to impacted traffic in March. Load factor, too, will likely decline to 82.5 per cent, down sharply by 350 basis points,” they said.

The analysts, however, expect the airline to end the fiscal year with a 48 per cent domestic market share, having carried 68 million passengers.

In a first, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren announced that the state would fly back 60 migrant workers who were stranded in Batalik-Kargil area in Leh to Ranchi. Soren thanked officials responsible for the mission as also the teams Spice Jet and IndiGo Airlines for their support.

The crisis of migrant workers has assumed unprecedented dimensions over the past few weeks with the Supreme Court stepping in and taking cognizance of the issue on Thursday.
The Supreme Court stated that there had been lapses on part of both the Central and state governments. The apex court came out with a detailed interim order on the transportation of migrants.
The Supreme Court directed the Railways to provide trains when state governments seek them. Importantly, the apex court said that no train or bus fare will be charged from migrant workers and will instead be shared by the states.

SpiceJet plans to use drones for delivering essentials & e-commerce in remote areas

New Delhi: SpiceJet plans to use drones for faster delivery of medical, essential and e-commerce supplies in remote areas of the country. The budget airline has got Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) nod to conduct drone trials. A consortium led by SpiceJet’s freighter arm, SpiceXpress, had submitted a proposal to the regulator for conducting experimental “beyond visual line of sight” (BVLOS) operations of remotely piloted aircraft in response to a DGCA expression of interest.

SpiceJet CMD Ajay Singh said: “Testing of drone technology for last mile connectivity and cost-effective cargo deliveries are a big leap in the air transportation of essential and non-essential supplies in India. We are extremely optimistic about using this exciting new mode of delivery for products like perishables and medicines which have a smaller shelf-life and need urgent deliveries in the remotest parts of India.”

The consortium includes Throttle Aerospace, a drone manufacturing company, AeoLogic, an analytics and software solution firm and Involia, which is a provider of air traffic awareness and collision avoidance services.

“SpiceXpress will be looking at last-mile delivery from the warehouse and the prime focus will be on delivering medical emergency parcels and essential supplies in remote areas. Drones will ensure a faster delivery bringing down costs and would go a long way to augment our business to offer express delivery of medicines, perishable items and e-commerce shipments,” the airline said in a statement.

16 passengers on flights of IndiGo, 2 other airlines test positive for COVID-19; Karnataka seeks limited flights from 5 states

New Delhi/Bengaluru: A total of 16 asymptomatic passengers on seven different flights including 13 of them who travelled by IndiGo have tested positive for COVID-19 since the resumption of domestic air services on Monday, according to airlines data.

Two of the three asymptomatic passengers who tested positive for the infection had travelled by Spicejet while one took a flight of Air India subsidiary Alliance Air.

The Karnataka government, meanwhile, said on Thursday it has requested the Civil Aviation ministry to reduce the number of flights originating from five states--Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan--in the light of the high number of COVID-19 cases there, hours after a minister said it has "suspended" air travel from these states.

Seeking to clarify his statement, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister J C Madhuswamy maintained that Karnataka has not sought imposing a ban on flights from the five states as reported in some sections of the media.

Karnataka has appealed to the Civil Aviation ministry to take steps to lessen the air traffic to the state, with the “sacred intention” that there may not be adequate quarantine facilities, if there is a huge turnout in a short span of time, he said in a press release issued by the state information department.

Earlier, Madhuswamy told reporters in Bengaluru that the decision to stop flights from these states, which have a high number of coronavirus cases, for the time being was taken at a Cabinet meeting.

"People are coming from other states to Karnataka.... we have decided to suspend air traffic from five states, as cases here (Karnataka) may further increase," he said.

As many as 115 new coronavirus cases were reported in Karnataka on Thursday taking the infection count to 2,533, state minister S Suresh said. The minister said among the new cases, 95 are inter-state rail and bus passengers.

West Bengal, which allowed resumption of domestic air services only from Thursday, and Maharashtra are among the states where airlines are having only limited operations following their requests to the Centre in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

As flyers test positive upon arrival, states look to tighten SOPs

Even as most states have strict quarantine and testing norms for passengers arriving by domestic flights, some like Delhi, Goa, etc had comparatively easier standard operating procedures (SOPs). But now with some passengers testing positive for coronavirus upon arrival, a further clampdown of stance by the states on free movement of air passengers could be on the cards. Goa has already moved to compulsorily test all arriving passengers, unless they were able to produce a negative test-certificate.

As of early Thursday, as many as four passengers, at least two of which were asymptomatic, had tested positive upon arrival. All four of these travelled on the first day of resumption of flight operations. Tuesday, India’s largest airline IndiGo reported a 24-year old person on its Monday flight from Chennai to Coimbatore tested positive. Another passenger, a 50-year old, on board an Alliance Air flight from Delhi to Ludhiana was also found positive on Tuesday. On Wednesday, two passengers who flew to Guwahati from Ahmedabad on SpiceJet flights also reported positive for the virus upon arrival.
In SpiceJet’s case, red-flags are also being raised at the fact that since one of the passengers was flying from Ahmedabad to Guwahati via Delhi, the passenger should have been tested at Delhi itself but wasn’t since there is no mandatory testing for those arriving at the Delhi airport.
Since it opened its airport to domestic passengers, the Goa government has changed its standard operating procedures twice. Earlier it had given three options — either get a Covid negative test certificate issued within 48 hours prior to the date of arrival by a lab authorised by ICMR or get test done at the airport for Rs 2000 and wait for results, or choose home quarantine. With the number of cases showing an increase, the Government has now removed the option of home quarantine with everyone having to undergo compulsory testing if they didn’t have a Covid-19 negative test certificate. Goa so far has 68 active cases of which 31 are active.
Even as the Centre announced the restarting of domestic flight operations with a two-day notice, it failed to extensively consult with the states. Hours before the recommencement of domestic flights, airlines were informed of the demands of certain states to operate curtailed schedules that led to cancellation of flights on the first day itself.

IndiGo, SpiceJet, AirAsia India, Vistara open bookings as GoAir unlikely to resume operations from May 25

IndiGo, SpiceJet, AirAsia India and Vistara have started taking bookings for flights starting May 25 but GoAir is yet to decide on whether it will resume flights from June 1 or earlier.

The government had announced on May 17 that domestic flight operations will remain suspended until May 31. A day later, the union civil aviation minister had said the decision to allow flights is also up to state governments.

On May 20, the civil aviation minister surprised airlines and airports by announcing that the government will allow domestic passenger flights to resume from May 25 in a calibrated manner.

It is understood that airlines, airports and all stakeholders received information regarding resumption of flights from May 25 only via the tweet and had still not received the standard operating procedure and flight schedule to be followed.

GoAir may implement a wait and watch approach and then decide on taking bookings or it may directly resume operations from June 1. However, it is unlikely that the airline will resume operations from May 25. It is important to note that the airline has already been taking bookings for flights effective June 1.

While IndiGo is the healthiest of all airlines in terms of balance sheet, for GoAir, it has come to a matter of survival.

GoAir has put substantial percentage of its employees on leave without pay program until June 1 and was the first one to announce that it has sought government's support to tide through the COVID-19 crisis.

"We have likewise been requesting the Indian banking system for financial support but they have also not yet reached a conclusion on how they should financially support the airlines despite the various advisories from the RBI," the Wadias had written to employees early this month.

As far as other airlines are concerned, all have been working overnight to get the system running and keep aircraft, crew, staff and route map in place.

Hoping to operate at least 150 flights on May 25, says SpiceJet CEO Ajay Singh

SpiceJet CEO Ajay Singh said his airline was hoping to operate at least 150 flights on May 25, and that there was going to be significant demand in the short term.

Speaking in a panel discussion on CNBC-TV18, Singh said the industry was relieved that at least flights would be taking off and that airlines would not have to keep the middle seat vacant.

On the government's decision to regulate fares, Singh said following the new pricing rules would not be complex.

"Airlines are used to changing fares by the minute. So following certain rules on that is not particularly complex," he said.
"From the government’s perspective, they needed to ensure that as they were opening flights the whole system appeared to be reasonable – that airlines got a reasonable return and that the passengers were not going to be fleeced," he said.

Singh the industry was adequately prepared to resume operations.

"The government has been discussing these measures with us for some days now. So there has been some preparatory work already done by the airlines," he said.

Singh said all check-ins at airports are going to be web check-ins.
