The ordeal for passengers, some of them connecting to flights for international destinations, began when their flight scheduled to depart at 9.10 pm on Wednesday could not be refuelled. “We had been trying till past midnight so that the aircraft could take in the fuel. Finally the officials gave up by 1 am, and the flight was grounded,” said an Air India spokesperson.

Air India officials made other arrangements for the passengers and 150 were provided alternate flights to Delhi in the morning. “They were booked in AI 440 which departed at 6 am, and by AI 443 which departed at 8.56 am,” said the spokesperson. For the remaining passengers, hotel accommodation was provided.
