Ottawa, Ontario: Searidge Technologies (http://www.searidgetech), a provider of mission critical solutions to the Air Navigation Services industry, on September 6 announced the launch of its Camera-based Airport Surface Detection (CASD) system, a new technology to address the growing concern of runway incursion.
CASD uses a network of digital imaging sensors to provide radar-like coverage around the airport. The system uses some of the worlds most advanced image and video processing algorithms to detect and track aircraft, vehicles, humans and other objects moving around an airport surface.
“CASD offers a critical view of airport surface traffic that can be used by all tower and airport personnel” explains Alex Sauriol, director, technology and projects, Searidge Technologies.
The data that CASD provides can be used to:
- Provide air traffic controllers/airport gate controllers with a real-time situation display of where aircraft and other vehicles are located on the airport surface
- Improve coverage in airports with ground radars, particularly around terminal buildings
- Trigger alarms when runway incursions are detected
CASD offers airports, airlines and air navigation service providers’ benefits such as:
- Enhanced safety - runway incursion warning and situational awareness
- More efficient gate assignment
- Improved security through “non-cooperative” target monitoring capabilities
Field trials of the technology are scheduled to begin October 2006.
