Visakhapatnam: The INS Dega airport, which received a facelift with completion of work on the 10,000-foot long runway and 24x7 status for operation of flights, is bound to spur fund flow from outside into industries, tourism and infrastructure sector.
Once the problem with regard to air traffic control is sorted out, the airport will be ready for operation round the clock. Its inability to operate flights in the evenings had brought disrepute to Vizag as investors were not willing to waste two working days.
The calibration of instrumentation landing system will be useful when visibility is poor. Operation of flights in the late evening would be a fillip to investment into various sectors. Now as per indications, either the Navy has to requisition trained manpower for manning air traffic round the clock or hand over the responsibility to the Airport Authority of India.
Even before opening the airport to 24-hour traffic, several airlines are coming up with offers to introduce their service to Vizag.
Silk Airways is planning to start a direct flight from Vizag to Singapore. Indian wants a stopover of its international flights to Singapore, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur at Vizag. Trans India Airlines has sought permission from Ministry of Defence and Director-General of Civil Aviation to place two of its aircraft at Vizag and four at Hyderabad.
