Indian reduces free baggage allowance

Doha: In a move that is sure to raise the hackles of passengers, India’s state-run airline, Indian, has decided to reduce its free baggage allowance from 40kg to 30kg for economy passengers from Saturday.
Similarly, the free allowance to business class passengers will be reduced from 50kg to 40kg.
According to sources, the decision, which was reportedly an “unpleasant” one to the airline, is only “temporary”. The airline “will see the situation and take appropriate decision” later.
The airline’s action follows the recent complaints from passengers of baggage being offloaded.
In a message sent to travel agents, the Indian has said that sometimes it had to refuse passengers in order to accommodate excess baggage of passengers. “Needless to say that non-delivery of baggage to our passengers at the destination immediately on arrival not only creates avoidable extra work to our office but also unnecessary inconvenience to our passengers,” it stated.
The decision to reduce free baggage was to ensure that all registered baggage was carried along with passengers, an airline official said.
