Amritsar: The absence of category three instrument landing system (ILS) is giving sleepless nights to the officials of Rajasansi International Airport, as the fog, which is very thick in this area, is making safe landing of aircraft not only difficult, but also risky. The category three ILS system allows landing in the visibility as low as 50 metres.
In the past few weeks, flight delays and difficulties in landing had been reported at the airport, which at present has category one ILS. Due to these problems, the demand for upgrading ILS system is gathering momentum.
There were reports that the Airport Authority of India (AAI) had mooted a plan for the upgrade of the ILS system to category two if not three, but due to fund shortage, the plan was shelved. The airport that has witnessed a heavy rush of domestic and foreign flights in the past one year has a multi-crore ambitious upgrade and modernisation project under way.
