Corporate flying set for liftoff

The glut of pilot aspirants in India is now an old story. But, with many flooding the market, are there any job avenues for them? General aviation is one. Especially the world of corporate/charter flying, a sector often ignored by pilots in their pursuit of a glamorous job in commercial airlines. But there are benefits accruing from corporate flying too - you don't have crazy work schedules laid down by the roster, get quality time with the family, fly political bigwigs and head honchos all over and are well-paid.
Capt G R Gopinath, chairman, Deccan Aviation, one of the largest charter companies, says, "Aviation in India is undergoing a cyclical process. After many airlines went bust in the early '90s, numerous pilots lost their jobs. Most managed to get them back after 1999 when the boom began again. When I started Air Deccan, I got 200 applications for every one job. All got absorbed. Even those flying charters switched over. But now with the glut, I see the reverse happening and commercial pilot license (CPL) holders getting into charters/corporate flying. But it's still in the nascent stage."
