Delhi tops airport theft list, Mumbai second

MUMBAI: According to statistics collected by the civil aviation ministry, Delhi tops the list of airport theft cases with 79 complaints registered by passengers last year, resulting in losses to the tune of Rs 57.8 lakh.
Though Mumbai came second - it saw less then half that number with only 37 cases - the thefts were to the tune of Rs 4.81 crore.
"Apart from this staggering disparity in the amount of loss, one common aspect is that theft cases are on the rise. About 3-4 years ago, Mumbai registered only 11-15 cases annually," said an official from the ministry, adding that the actual figure of thefts in these airports could be about 3-4 times more than the registered number.
Says an airline executive, "Due to the time taken and paper work involved, many passengers do not lodge a complaint, especially if the theft does not involve critical items like passports, credit cards etc. Moreover, as we do not have a culture of insuring our baggage, especially on domestic flights, the need for a complaint number is less."
