New Delhi: Infiltration by extremist elements, food and water contamination, use of missiles and mortar attacks against aircraft and attacks by chemical and biological weapons are emerging threats to the civil aviation sector, India's Commissioner of Security, Civil Aviation (COSCA) J.K. Dutt has said. The threats were listed in a recent presentation made by Mr Dutt, who is chief of the bureau of civil aviation security (BCAS), the government body entrusted with civil aviation security in the country.
Mr Dutt said that there was a need to address these new and emerging security threats to the civil aviation sector. Listing "planned security measures for the future", Mr Dutt said that civil aviation aircraft could be equipped with defence systems to guard against attacks. Reduction of proximity of residential and commercial areas to airports, scanners for vehicles and cargo and transmission of advance information on passengers to the bureau of immigration were also listed as security measures for the future.
Another measure listed for the future in Mr Dutt's presentation includes introduction of "smart cards with biometrics". Biometrics are automated methods of recognising a person based on features such as face, fingerprints, handwriting, iris, retina, veins, and voice. Installation of boom barriers (barriers that could be electrified) and bollards (short vertical posts) to regulate vehicles (at airports) are other futuristic measures stated.
