New Delhi: A major disaster was averted at the IGI airport in New Delhi on Monday night (May 5) after a pilot of an international airline didn't wait for Air Traffic Control clearence. The pilot took his aircraft to the runaway even as another flight was about to land.
The intruding European carrier, spotted by alert ATC officials was asked it to clear the runway immediately so that a SpiceJet flight could land safely. Sources said that luckily for passengers on board these flights, the aircraft exited in the nick of time and a collision was averted. Sources have said that the pilot of another flight, who was on the common radio frequency, heard the commander of the European carrier complaining to ATC.
The pilot has said to have told ATC that the SpiceJet plane's wing tip was still on the runway when he was cleared to roll out and that he would report a near-miss on reaching his destination. "Two flights were diverted to Lucknow while some other got delayed due to change in direction of landing due to the change in wind direction," sources said.
