New policy to give new airlines more parking space at major airports

New Delhi: Start-up airlines such as Kingfisher, SpiceJet and IndiGo would soon find more parking space at major airports such as Mumbai and Delhi. In a move to take back unused night parking slots from older airlines like Jet Airways and Air India, the government is framing a policy on allocating night parking slots to airlines.
At present, new airlines have to park their aircraft at night in far-flung cities due to unavailability of space at major airports. As the aircraft is generally scheduled to originate from main cities, the airlines have to burn extra fuel in reaching there to begin service. Some airlines which began operation early have reserved additional parking slots at major airports.
“We are framing guidelines for night-parking slots to airlines. The new policy would bring in more discipline in allotting parking slots to airlines at airports. Unlike earlier, we would now allow night parking slots to airlines on the basis of their fleet size. If within a certain period they fail to induct aircraft for a slot, the space would be taken back from them and given to other carriers,” a senior official in the ministry of civil aviation said.
