A documentary account of doomed Air India Flight 182 will air commercial-free on CBC-TV at 9 p.m. Sunday, June 22, which is the 23rd anniversary of the flight's departure.
Filmmaker Sturla Gunnarsson's acclaimed Air India 182 reveals the story of how "Canada's first major counter-terrorism operation failed to thwart the conspiracy and lays bare the 'perfect storm' of errors that resulted in the world's most lethal act of aviation terrorism" before 9/11, according to the network.
On June 22, 1985, a mid-air explosion caused the jet to crash, killing everyone aboard. Sikh terrorists were later deemed responsible in the plot.
The film recounts the final hours, days and weeks before the plane disappeared from Irish radar screens, a few hours into its flight from Montreal to Delhi.
Air India 182 debuted at the 2008 Hot Docs Festival in Toronto, where it was hailed as "compelling, poignant... the definitive film about the Air India tragedy and the most important documentary of the past few years."
