New Delhi: Trial runs on IGI airport’s new runway are likely to begin from August 15.
TOI had earlier reported that airlines, specially domestic, had been concerned about the extra taxiing time from the domestic hanger to the new runway due to the high cost of ATF and wanted the management to come up with some strategy in which their taxiing time would be reduced.
For take-off from the Vasant Kunj side, domestic aircraft would first have to taxi the 3.8km of the main runway and then down another 4.4km of the new runway before being positioned for take-off.
‘‘Take-off from the Vasant Kunj side will involve an extra taxiing distance of about 9km. For trial runs at least, we will therefore only concentrate on landings so that aircraft can take the connecting taxiway at the end of the runway and save at least 4km of taxiing,’’ said sources.
Airlines sources said that they had been told to be prepared to use the new runway. Once this runway is fully operational by September, the main runway would be closed for recarpeting and would not be available for a while.
