BBC says 6 dead at IGI, retracts

New Delhi: In a major blunder, the BBC World reported early on Friday morning that six gunmen had been shot by Indian security forces at the Indira Gandhi International Aiport in New Delhi.
It later retracted the report.
According to a BBC spokesperson in London, the report was telecast at 12.40 am IST on its domestic, international channels and the BBC English website. It said that according to unconfirmed reports, there had been gunfire and casualties at the IGI. An unnamed “airport worker” was cited as the news source on the website.
The report remained on air for 30 minutes before the BBC withdrew it after Indian authorities denied any such incident occurring at the airport.
