Mangalore: The Bajpe airport which has undergone changes to accommodate international flights in the past five years may not be ready to offer the facilities of international style terminal facilities in the coming holiday season. The terminal which was to be ready by February 2009 may be ready only in June.
The slow pace of work has affected the schedule of completion according to the airport authorities. Though 70 per cent of work was over the civil works were still pending. The work cannot be speeded up as the remaining work pertains to the interiors and finishing stages which needs care and finesse. The contractors have already indicated that the work will take some more time and many more materials were yet to arrive from Mumbai.
Since the airport lounge has to be completed in two stages lifts and conveyor belts had to installed in two different levels which is what taking some more time the contractors say. The electric work is also going on in a slow pace.
In the meanwhile the connectivity to the new terminal was posing some problems; a part of the road connecting the new terminal via Adyapady temple has not been concretized and may not be ready till July. The KUDCEMP authorities who have pledged their entire workforce to complete this stretch of road say that the road will take up atleast two months for completion. Another connecting road passing through the Adyapady village to the new terminal which is in the hands of Zilla Panchayat has also not been completed. It is still in the mud road stage which has irked the airport authorities. Fliers have gone to the Zilla Panchayat to complete that road before March.
