Mangalore: All they can do is stare at the wreckage for endless hours. The monotony is broken only when curious visitors drop in to take pictures.
At ground zero, for police personnel guarding the site of the air crash it's a thankless job. There's no immediate reprieve for the dozen police personnel as well as a couple of Air India security officials guarding the IX 812 wreckage site.
They will be relieved only after the judge appointed by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), to inquire into the crash, inspects the spot and orders removal of the wreckage. The court of inquiry has not yet been appointed by the DGCA.
Harpreet A De Singh, general manager, Quality Management Services, Air India, said that the handling of the wreckage was out of the purview of AI and DGCA is the sole authority handling it.
Regarding impending rain which may trigger infections causing serious health problems to personnel guarding the site, Harpreet said the district administration has been told to coordinate with the DGCA on this aspect.
Additional deputy commissioner Prabhakar Sharma said a team led by district health officials had visited the site a couple of days back and orally informed that there was no problem.
The police personnel are put on a rotation basis from nearby stations. On Wednesday, there were police personnel from Moodabidri, Kavoor and Mulky.
