Chennai: India will be get a modern air traffic flow management (ATFM) system to ensure the effective use of available airspace. The centralised monitoring system based in New Delhi will coordinate between different air regions in the country and also help lower the risk of mishaps.
“The ATFM will monitor the entire airspace designated to the Airports Authority of India. This core control station will start functioning from December 2011,” said Airports Authority of India chairman V.P. Agarwal.
Mr Agarwal maintained that the AAI had sorted out a year-long dispute with Chennai Metro Rail Ltd over a stretch of the elevated transit system close to the Chennai airport.
“We have decided to allow the Metro Rail project to continue. We had a discussion on security issues on the elevated structure, and representatives Metro Rail agreed to lower the height of the structure considering the safety of flights and airport operations,” Mr Agarwal said. The AAI chief on Friday inaugurated a security hold area in the airport and inspected the ongoing expansion work.
