CAG’s Praful Patel rap leaves NCP red-faced

Mumbai: The Comptroller and Auditor General’s (CAG’s) report indicting Union minister Praful Patel for his policy decisions in the ministry of civil aviation has left top NCP leaders worried about the party’s image.
While the core group has decided to let Patel give an explanation on the charges leveled in connection with acquisitions and merger of Air India and Indian Airlines, they have also begun to wonder why only alliance partners in the UPA government have become the target in the Congress-led coalition at the Centre.
Earlier, the CAG report had indicted DMK’s A Raja in the 2G scam that culminated in his imprisonment.
Highly-placed sources in the NCP said, “The party had clearly sensed that things were getting out of control with a lot of criticism against Patel’s management of Indian Airlines which could have lead the top leadership to relieve him of the plum portfolio of civil aviation earlier this year. In January 2004, cabinet reshuffle decision was taken to elevate Patel to a cabinet rank with lesser significant portfolio.”
The political managers in the party said, “Even if there is some truth in the CAG findings, nobody can lose sight of the expansion and modernisation plans undertaken during Patel’s tenure.”
