For airlines, it's a way of making money in bulk

Mumbai: The airlines waging a price war and bringing the fares down may be a windfall for fliers right now.
In January, Spice jet had opened a sale for some seats across its sectors, forcing other low-cost-carriers to follow suit. Similarly, after Jet airways announced the drop in the fares last Monday, most other airlines too had to follow to ensure that they don't lose out on business. Experts said that the move to open some seats on discounted fares is a smart one. It gives the airline a bulk of money in one go. "Also, since many people would book in a hurry, there might even be quite a few cancellations. The airline can make more from that too," said Rajesh Rateria, managing director, Cirrus travels.
