Mass leave by unions, officials may see Chennai airport shut for a day

Chennai: The threat of closure of the Chennai airport for a day on June 21 is looming large if both the employees and officers of the Airports Authority of India go en masse on leave. This is to protest against the Government’s privatisation plans of the Chennai airport along with Kolkata.
If the closure happens, it could be the first time in the history of the airport.
“We may not have a choice but to close the airport for a day if both the union employees and officers go on leave. However, we will come to know about this only on June 19. The thought of a closure is only a hypothetical situation at present ,” said H.S. Suresh, Chennai Airport Director.
It is said that the Chennai airport has been operational since 1932, but only for military aircraft. In 1952, the Civil Aviation Department took over its operations followed by the International Airport Authority of India in 1972.
While the union representing the employees has given a notice to the Government to go on mass leave, there is no communication from officers, he clarified.
