Shops razed to check bird-hits

Bhubaneswar:  Stepping up the drive to check bird menace near Biju Patnaik airport, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Friday demolished more than 100 unauthorized roadside shops selling fish and meat attracting birds. The shops were located on the road between Stewart School and Delta square.
BMC launched the eviction drive after the airport authorities repeatedly expressed concern in the city management group (CMG) meeting about the presence of birds near the airport due to animal waste generated from the stalls. BMC and airport officials jointly conducted a survey to identify the clusters of shops attracting birds.
"We had listed the shops and served notices to them to vacate the space. Although fish and meat stalls were demolished, we also razed food and grocery shops, which were unauthorized," said assistant commissioner (recovery) Sumita Behera. The civic body engaged about four bulldozers to demolish the shops. There was no resistance during the drive, she added. About two platoons police force were deployed during the demolition drive.
