117 Maharashtra cops to guard Juhu airport

Mumbai: The Juhu airport, which has been the focus of a major security debate owing to terror threats, will be protected by the state police.
Despite its own circular stating that the aerodrome should be guarded by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), the Bureau of Civil Aviation (BCAS) has now agreed to deploy 117 state police personnel to protect both the airport permeter and terminal. At present, only 30 police officials are posted at the airport. This decision also brings an end to a four-year-long negotiation with the CISF over security.
The decision to sanction 117 state police personnel to guard the aerodrome was taken at a meeting between BCAS, Airports Authority of India (AAI) and state police in Delhi on July 17, said sources. "The decision has been taken. We are waiting for a final circular before the decision is put into effect," said VK Punyal, director, Juhu airport. Other than flights operated to oil rigs, for three years it has been used extensively by companies like Reliance, Essar and the Sahara Group, and the state government.
