Mumbai: The Airport Authority of India (AAI) has directed the civic administration to control littering around the premise of the airport to tackle the menace posed by birds and animals near the airport. It said the solid waste management around 10-km periphery of the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) needs improvement.
"There is a menace posed by stray dogs and birds around the garbage dumps near the airports as the garbage is strewn all around the area," said Harshad Kale, Assistant Municipal Commissioner of L ward (Kurla).
"We have been advised to dispose the garbage in bags so that the garbage dumps do not attract birds, especially near the landing stand and take-off area of the airplanes," he added.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and CSIA have been conducting joint inspections since the past few months to ensure cleanliness around the airport premise.
