Residents near Kochi airport demand revival of canal

Kochi: People living in panchayats near the Cochin International Airport Ltd (Cial) went on warpath on Monday, demanding the revival of Chengalthodu canal which was blocked for the construction of the airport.
Residents claimed that the flooding on August 5 was a result of blocking the canal for the construction of compound wall for Cial. Nearly 250 families living in Thuravumkara area had to be rehabilitated due to the flooding.
Prior to the construction of airport, the entire area was a paddy field with adequate provisions to drain off rainwater through the canal, protesters claimed.
They demanded that the canal be revived without affecting the runway. Check dams should be constructed across Periyar to prevent flooding of the Chengalthodu canal. They also demanded the construction of flyovers or bridges across low-lying areas of Thuravumkara area.
