Corruption cloud over Air India as senior staff 'grab company flats'

Air India's home truths are as bad as its bottomlines. It's been officially prohibited for years, but senior Air India officials continue to occupy the well-appointed flats of Air India Colony in Delhi's tony Vasant Vihar area despite owning houses in the Capital.
There have also been allegations of embezzlement of funds that are allocated every year for maintaining these flats.
These allocations aren't chump change; the annual maintenance outlay for these flats in 2011-12 was all of Rs 384 crore.
An official Air India notification of November 1, 2010 prohibits officers from using official accommodation if they have their own house within 50km of the municipal limits of Delhi. The notification also makes it very clear that official accommodation is not available to employees who have taken housing loans from Air India.
Air India officials told Mail Today that it is not easy to get official accommodation in the Capital, and that many of those ensconced in their Vasant Vihar nests have networked with higher-ups in the organization to exploit the situation.
After repeated complaints of such favoritism, the airline's management issued a fresh notification on April 10, 2012 to discontinue departmental quotas which were misused to get official accommodation out of turn and at the cost of genuine cases.
