54 kg Gold Worth Rs 17 Crore Seized at Airport, 3 Held

Bangalore: The Kempegowda International Airport Police seized 54 kg of gold biscuits worth Rs 16.52 crore from suspected smugglers. They arrested three people identified as Bala Subramanyan, Eshwarmurthy and Ravi Verma. The three were bringing the gold from Kolkata and were smuggling it to Coimbatore through Bangalore. Police said they were carrying the gold biscuits, each weighing 1 kg, in three bags.
Security officials found the gold based on information from the city police. Sources reveal that Police Commissioner Raghavendra Auradkar received  a tip-off from an unknown caller about the huge cache of gold on a Jet Airways flight. The city police, in coordination with KIA officials, seized it.
According to police, the accused claimed to have bought the gold from Scotia Bank in Mumbai and produced a photocopy of the purchase receipt. However, police sources say the document is fake.
