After smooth inauguration, Terminal 2 has a chaotic first night

Mumbai: In sharp contrast to its smooth opening on Wednesday afternoon, when bags made it to passengers in a record six minutes, T2 witnessed considerable chaos on its first night of operation after several simultaneous international arrivals. Of the 95 daily arrivals and departures at T2, 80 are at night.
Airport officials monitored the first night from the newly setup Joint Control Center, noting down every problem that arose. The JCC has ground staff, GVK staff, fire and emergency service staff, Airport Operations Control Centre staff, and customs and CISF officers as its members.
The main problem, JCC found, was baggage dispersal. The advanced system has a marker that identifies bags declared suspect by customs and related agencies. "Unfortunately, an adequete number of loaders were not available at the baggage sorting area to remove these marked bags. And as the officers were busy themselves, the bags started piling up," an official said.
