Copters at Juhu airport will weather the storm thanks to new technology

Mumbai: Inadequate weather data will no longer cause a helicopter taking off from Mumbai to crash, as the Juhu aerodrome on Monday got India's first Aviation Weather Observation System (AWOS) system, which provides pilot with realtime data on weather updates on the flight.
A standalone system, AWOS has been installed by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), and will be coordinated by IMD Mumbai and Pune.
Pilots of the helicopter agencies registered with IMD will have access to continuous information regarding visibility, the type of clouds, wind pattern and pressure. The system will send messages to pilots through a wireless mode in the range of 50 nautical miles.
The Juhu aerodrome, India's largest chopper base, caters to more than a hundred helicopter flights daily. The system will also provide information through SMSes, and there will be a continuous communication with the Air Traffic Controller.
