Man carrying gold worth Rs 22 lakh held at Ahmedabad airport

Ahmedabad: The customs department on Friday arrested a man for smuggling gold worth Rs 22.74 lakh at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. Ahmedabad-based Saiyed Asif Hussain was caught with 782 grams of gold concealed in an electronic appliance at the airport. According to sources, Saiyed is a first-time carrier.
From January 1 to March 31 this year, 21 major cases of gold smuggling have been detected by customs officials at the airport and gold weighing 18.1 kg worth Rs 5.4 crore has been seized and 23 persons have been arrested.
As soon as Saiyed arrived from Doha in Qatar Airways flight QR-534 on Friday morning, the customs officials detained him and took him to the red channel for detailed examination of his baggage. "Saiyed had concealed gold weighing 781.770 grams in a steam cleaner machine in the form of wire," said a customs official. He was later produced at the metropolitan court on Friday.
