High-voltage election campaign doubles Varanasi airport earnings

Lucknow: High volume of air traffic in the crucial parliamentary elections in the holy city has come as a windfall for the Varanasi Airport in Babatpur. Officials on Sunday said earnings from air traffic doubled in the last few weeks that saw frenetic activity during the election campaign.
With top politicians making a beeline for Varanasi along with their retinue and hangers-on, many of them on chartered jets, sources at Varanasi airport said it has been fair weather as far as revenue is concerned.
The airport witnesses on an average up to 15 to 20 flights per day. Against this, there were around 30 aircraft flying in and out daily in addition to the normal air traffic in the last two months, said airport director, S K Malik.
An aircraft weighing more than 42 tonnes and choppers pay a landing fee of around Rs 500 per landing. "Even though most aircraft were of less than usual weight, there was a substantial rise in the number of days for which they remained parked in the city," he said.
