Customs seize gold concealed in boxes of dates

Mumbai: Gold worth Rs 17.29 lakh was seized from a passenger who arrived at the Mumbai airport from Dubai by a Jet Airways flight on Sunday night. The gold was concealed in packets of dates, customs officials told Mirror.

"The dates were deseeded and gold was inserted instead. They were then packed in jars of Honey Nut, a dry fruit cereal," an officer said.

AIU staff, who were keeping an eye on the passengers arriving by Jet Airways flight 9W 535, stopped the accused, identified as Mohammed Faisal, based on random profiling.

"An elaborate screening procedure was carried out which led us to the gold seeds. We are now interrogating Faisal to check whether he has been involved in such smuggling cases," the officer added.

Faisal, however, has claimed to be unaware of the gold concealed in dates.
