Ahmedabad: The air intelligence unit of the customs department on Tuesday morning held three men for smuggling gold worth Rs 39.25 lakh at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The Mumbai-based men in their twenties were caught with 1.425 kg of gold bars concealed in their private parts.
According to sources, all the three men — Kishan Goklani, Hanish Pherwani and Pradeep Rupani — belong to Ullasnagar in Mumbai and are first-time carriers.
This is the first such incident in this month and 39th incident of gold smuggling since January 2014. Since January 2014, the customs department alone has seized 41.045 kg of gold, worth Rs 11.93 crore and detained 50 smugglers at the city airport.
