In two years, number of AI crew has reduced by 700

Air India has finally decided to crack the whip on the substantial flight delays caused across its network in past few weeks due to a crippling shortage of cabin crew. AI chairman Rohit Nandan on Tuesday formed a panel to examine why this problem has taken such a serious turn and how it can be remedied within a fortnight - before the start of the peak winter travel season.

"It has been observed lately a large number of flights in the network are getting delayed or cancelled due to cabin crew. Many of these delays are of more than one hour which is of grave concern," Nandan's office order (RO/CMD/14/915) of November 11 says. In this order, he has directed the formation of a three-member panel "to examine the root cause of these disruptions." The problem of delayed/cancelled flights had assumed such proportions that the aviation ministry had to ask AI to improve its performance and not harass passengers.
