CISF turned airport into a warzone: AAI

Kozhikode: The unprecedented shootout and violent clashes between CISF personnel and Airport Authority of India (AAI) fire force staff at Karipur international airport on Wednesday night shocked the central civil aviation and home departments for the sheer scale of violence and the level of security breach at the airport. A CISF jawan was killed and three others were injured in the clash.

The airport violence report - submitted by the Airport Authority of India (AAI) - accessed by TOI painted a shocking picture of how the airport turned into a 'warzone' with armed CISF personnel - enraged over the death of their colleague - 'pointing guns even at senior officials and went on an armed rampage' inside the air traffic control (ATC) tower and the runway.

The home department termed the case as a major security and operational meltdown with serious safety implications. CISF head constable S S Yadav from Uttar Pradesh was killed after the pistol belonging to CISF sub-inspector Sita Ram Choudhary went off in the violent scuffle with AAI fire staffers Aji Kumar, Sunny Thomas and others over the issue of frisking at the entry gate near the ATC tower around 9.30pm.
Sources said the bullet hit Yadav's head from a very close range when he intervened to settle the altercation between Choudhary - who had drawn out his gun - and the fire staffers who were trying to grab his weapon. The bullet sliced through Choudhary's two fingers before hitting Yadav in the face. Sources said CCTV images showed how the CISF jawan dropped dead on the spot the very next second.

The AAI report said when senior ATC staff - including the assistant general manager - rushed to the spot on receiving a message from Apron control area (where aircraft are parked for boarding and fuelling at airports), "a bunch of armed CISF personnel rushed to the spot and started beating everyone and pointed their gun towards officers and staff. Everyone ran for their life."
