Eluru canal may hamper airport expansion plan

Vijayawada: After land acquisition, Eluru canal appears to be the new roadblock for Gannavaram airport expansion plans. At a recent meeting with district administration and Irrigation Department officials, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) officials wanted a portion of the Eluru canal to be diverted to facilitate airport expansion.

Gannavaram airport is spread over 500 acres and the district administration and AAI have been chalking out plans for expanding the airport by adding another 600 acres from Kesarapalli, Buddavaram, Ajjampudi and a few other neighbouring villages. To this effect, Krishna Collector Babu A had also assured farmers that they would be compensated under the land pooling scheme for parting with their lands.

Just when things were beginning to fall in place, the AAI officials came up with the proposal to divert Eluru canal, which passes through the proposed identified area. A 2.5 km stretch of the canal passes through Chinna Avutupalli, Buddavaram, Allapuram villages in the airport expansion identified area and this issue needs to be addressed, said a senior official from Irrigation Department.
