Kochi: Being the first solar-powered airport in the world, the Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) is all set to take part in this year’s UN Framework Convention on Climate Change’s (UNFCCC) Conference of Parties (COP-21) or the 2015 Paris Climate Summit, to be held in December.
Nearly 196 countries are expected to participate in the meet. The Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also evinced interest in presenting the CIAL model in the conference to drive home the message of renewable energy. Besides, the Centre is also exploring ways to replicate the CIAL model solar power generation in at least 30 airports in the country.
Speaking to Express, ACK Nair, CIAL airport director, said: “we have received a communication from the Civil Aviation Ministry to make a video presentation on the solar power project of the airport and send it to the office of the Prime Minister of India (PMO). Besides, the central government has also directed the other PPP (Public Private Partnership) airports coming up in the country to pursue the CIAL model after its successful implementation of various projects.”
The CIAL has also received queries from Liberia, Ghana, and Vietnam to study the project and some of them have also sought technical help to set up similar projects in their country, said the airport officials.
