Bengaluru: Airports in Karnataka are in the red. Barring Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), which runs on a PPP model, the other five operated by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) have incurred a loss of Rs 350.78 crore from 2011-2014.
This is not unique to the state as nearly 100 of the 125 airports operated by AAI are suffering loss, with just eight in the profit-making category. The AAI is still compiling the 2014-15 figures.
In Karnataka, the AAI operates the HAL airport in Bengaluru, whose functioning is restricted to accommodating chartered VIP flights; airports in Belagavi, Hubballi, Mangaluru and Mysuru face similar problems, with not enough air traffic to fetch revenues.
Of the lot, HAL airport is the worst hit; the facility has incurred a loss of Rs 160.75 crore in the said period, accounting for over 50% of the total loss incurred by airports operating in the state (see table).
