Bhubaneswar: The state government has spent nearly Rs 29 lakh to fly chief minister Naveen Patnaik in hired helicopters in four days, a government letter reveals. The amount will be paid to Deccan Charters Private Limited, whose helicopter has been hired by the state government. Naveen flew in the chopper from May 19 to 22.
With helicopter hiring for VVIP movement burdening the government coffers, an assembly departmentally-related standing committee (I) is likely to finalise buying of a helicopter for VVIP movements in the state on October 15. In its March meeting, the committee had recommended purchasing of a helicopter and renovation of airstrips and removing encroachments from there.
Committee chairman Ramesh Chandra Chyau Patnaik (Berhampur MLA) said the committee had decided to purchase a helicopter for tours of chief ministers, ministers and officials. "The general administration (GA) department had been asked to make a plan for it. In the October 15 meeting, we will review the action taken report of the GA department and finalise the matter," Patnaik told TOI.
