No flying chance to escape rain at Chennai's leaky airport

The flower pots that the city airport got in September to beautify the place for the Global Investors Meet came handy for the airport employees on Sunday: They, along with buckets, were used to catch water dripping through the leaky roof.

Passengers who fly out of Chennai airport are forced to hop and skip over puddles of water as they went through departure formalities inside the new terminals as the buildings have developed leaks in the heavy downpour in the past two days. Buckets and empty flower pots have been kept to catch water that drips from the roof at the check-in area and a few other spots. Airline employees are forced to carry out manual check-in as water seeps in through the aerobridges.

Sources said that the checkin area, immigration counters, immigration office and the link building that connects the new domestic and international ter minals have a leaky roof. The same is the scene in the business class lounge at the international terminal and security the check-in and lounge of domestic terminal. "It has become difficult to manage the passengers because of water seepage," said an official. "It is embarrassing because lounges are also affected in the international terminal. One bay from where passengers board has developed a leak."
