A marked growth in the number of passengers, both domestic and international, entry of new operators, increase in flight movements, and growth in cargo movement in the first six months of the present financial year have put Visakhapatnam International Airport in the fast-track mode.
The total traffic from the airport, which was 10,13,689 during 2013-14, increased to 10,99,952 during 2014-15, despite the severe cyclone Hudhud disrupting operations for weeks together in October 2014.
The number of international passengers marginally declined to 55,634 during 2014-15 compared to 59,179 during the previous year in view of the cancellation of flights for several weeks because of Hudhud.
The drop in international passengers seems to have been more than made up with 55,332 travelling during the first six months of the present financial year (April 2015 to September 2015). The total passenger traffic (domestic and international) has been put at 8,16,798 for the first six months and if the same trend continues, it would go up by more than 4 lakh compared to last year.
The aircraft movements, which was 11,809 (including 970 international) during 2014-15, were put at 8,466 (including 786 international) during the first six months this year and the figure is expected to reach 15,000 by the end of the present fiscal.
